FMMS Original: Gift 43

As any regular reader will know, we frequently receive bottles of booze as gifts and those bottles invariably tag along to our “meetings” to make their way into new cocktails. Today, that bottle is Licor 43.

Licor 43 is a rather unique Spanish liqueur that, as its name makes obvious, has 43 ingredients. Allegedly a secret family recipe, we don’t know what those ingredients are. What we do know is that they make for a unique-tasting syrupy liqueur with vanilla, citrus, and herbal notes and a nice warm gold colour. A gift for Bruno, he brought it into our lab (aka my kitchen) to see what he could come up with and actually managed this cocktail on his first try. What a legend.

Recipe

1 oz gin
1 oz Licor 43
¾ oz orange juice
¼ oz lemon juice
¼ oz simple syrup
1 egg white
2 dashes cranberry bitters

Add all ingredients except bitters into a shaker and dry shake. Add ice and shake again. Double strain into a coupe. Top with cranberry bitters and swirl with toothpick.

The result is a surprisingly light and fruity cocktail, with just the right amount of kick.

One of the most fun things about running this blog is that it gives us a great excuse to regularly get together and have a laugh when our significant others would probably rather we were being otherwise productive.

With this cocktail, we got a chance to do both, since a few of our wives tried and loved it too.
