FMMS Original: Walnut Manhattan

The classic Manhattan is a favourite of ours here at FMMS. It’s one of our go-to’s when we’re out for a drink or when we’re just getting together to make sh!t. I’d argue that it’s such an accessible drink for two reasons: simplicity and balance. There’s not much to it and that’s its appeal. It’s no wonder it’s been around for so long.

When we were approached to craft a winter cocktail menu for Ottawa’s EVOO Greek Kitchen, we knew we wanted to put a twist on the Manhattan somewhere on there.

Hence, the Walnut Manhattan was born.

Recipe

1 ½ oz rye or bourbon
¾ oz Martini & Rossi sweet vermouth
2 dashes Fee Brothers walnut bitters
Maraschino cherries or orange peel

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with ice and stir well. Strain into a rocks glass with ice. Garnish with Maraschino cherries or an orange peel as secondary choice.

The walnut bitters plays extremely well here and adds a nice contrast to the sweetness of the vermouth.

You still get the bold flavours you’d expect from the original, but with the seasonal flavour of walnut.

Like our Maple Sour, you can find this cocktail on EVOO’s menu. It’s been a fan favourite there and at various cocktail parties we’ve hosted over the last few months.
